<br />
Life has thrown a few curve balls at me this year and it has been quite a while since I have really had time to sit in an evening and have some me time, or to have blocks of time in a day to find a crafting head space.<br />
<br />
I have needed friends more than craft in many ways, and I have discovered even more than I already knew how many wonderful friends I have.<br />
<br />
There have been moments of creativity though and these little folk sum up quite well what I think of 2016 so far. I know some others going through a tough time too and they have all appreciated the funny side of having a smiling poo sitting on the desk!<br />
<br />
<br />

Hopeful though, and believe that maybe this will all be a bit like manure, and better things will come from all the crap 2016 has delivered thus far!!mutchletthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17511317718842228824noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1654844829751110842.post-73901358077722014402016-04-15T21:05:00.000+08:002016-04-15T21:05:02.614+08:00Another shower capThe <a href="http://onelittleimp.blogspot.com.au/2014/08/shower-cap.html" target="_blank">shower cap</a> I made about 18 months ago has run its course - a new one was required and luckily for me I found a fabric I really liked to make a new one last weekend.<br />
<br />
This is how it turned out. Tigger didn't oblige with a photo shoot like last time, so here is the shower cap sitting on the lavender bush!<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYu6lUprMvCx0HSTDr4V60zAZZU8hacKO5DLZKH6vlHLfrsZtIrNNseCIg4WFeMPSMwlkchcpbAhmlgAAwFSW3nt-8-4Tqf0x6uicyoJfpcbdH2ZXN0zsefVbhfTfRPqkX8oKKjQinp2sD/s1600/20160331-showercap-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYu6lUprMvCx0HSTDr4V60zAZZU8hacKO5DLZKH6vlHLfrsZtIrNNseCIg4WFeMPSMwlkchcpbAhmlgAAwFSW3nt-8-4Tqf0x6uicyoJfpcbdH2ZXN0zsefVbhfTfRPqkX8oKKjQinp2sD/s320/20160331-showercap-4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I did attach the elastic using a different technique than I used for the last few caps I made. I marked the elastic (19" for my head) and circle of the shower cap into eighths. Then I basted around the perimeter of the fabric circle once, and then again next to the first basted circle around the perimeter. Then I gathered the fabric using the basted stitches (pulling up one set of loose threads to gather half way in one direction & then did the same with the other 2 loose threads to gather in the other direction until the cap pretty much fitted my head. Only then did I attach the elastic using a zig zag stitch (next time use a wider zig zag stitch and/or make sure to keep to the right side of the elastic so that it isn't visible when wearing the cap).<br />
Worked much better.<br />

The pattern was super easy to follow, but the fabric estimations were far beyond what I ended up needing. That was a good thing in a way as it meant I had enough of some of the gorgeous print I bought years ago to use for the bodice outer & sleeves.<br />

Washi 3 ways.2015 was the year that I gained confidence in sewing clothes. It started with a few more kiddy clothes, and then a lovely colleague at work gifted me the Washi dress pattern. I realised I can do this, I can make clothes!<br />
<br />
Here is Washi 3 ways.<br />
My first take - a short top in rayon. I really struggled with the shirring on my sewing machine. It was hard work. No amount of playing around with the tension of the shirring elastic on the bobbin worked. Frustrating!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWqlnHK3cRFUpaHvISlE0mAuw-uM4qNT7UREHtl7-eUFIh8pdRmJ4IpQesy0t4sNhlmaYe2HT-7nVbechP3FuCNF8dgrTVZb9xPMe9__LmqMIhqu26jqZpH_DgrvddexlfSLyNtEAzxnf2/s1600/20150811-Washi+tunic-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWqlnHK3cRFUpaHvISlE0mAuw-uM4qNT7UREHtl7-eUFIh8pdRmJ4IpQesy0t4sNhlmaYe2HT-7nVbechP3FuCNF8dgrTVZb9xPMe9__LmqMIhqu26jqZpH_DgrvddexlfSLyNtEAzxnf2/s640/20150811-Washi+tunic-2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
After loads of searching I found a way to do shirring on my machine (husqvarna Viking) that didn't require me buying a special presser foot. Thank you <a href="http://kbenco.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/shirring-with-bridging-stitch-and.html" target="_blank">kbenco</a>. This blogger gave me the technique of using the bridging zig-zag stitch and presser foot C to sew over the separate pieces of a looped piece of shirring elastic while keeping them slightly separated. Pull to gather and then repeat enough times to get the width of shirring needed. No shirring elastic in the bobbin, just sew over shirring elastic laid on top of the fabric. I wish I had found this site sooner - I could have saved a whole lot of frustration!<br />
<br />
The next 2 versions were a whole lot easier with the shirring sorted. I adjusted the neckline slightly (a little higher and created a tunic length in lawn and then a dress length one too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYsaMXAj0uJamVtjLW9p_mTkD6Y95TaSz6o-ANsZ4MXP2aZRWWt6WZAEBKoJ7l68ODVuYNreg5gX-ZgN_C8ELGQ3xh_ku9Hz27dmAg54SP0qCmjsuIxASXbw0XqTpVE98X3m7p9zPd5RpY/s1600/20160124-Washi+-9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYsaMXAj0uJamVtjLW9p_mTkD6Y95TaSz6o-ANsZ4MXP2aZRWWt6WZAEBKoJ7l68ODVuYNreg5gX-ZgN_C8ELGQ3xh_ku9Hz27dmAg54SP0qCmjsuIxASXbw0XqTpVE98X3m7p9zPd5RpY/s640/20160124-Washi+-9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The dress is my favourite just for the fabric.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8wYfLJ1FHR1BvCkV2T3xZ_U5cEFgEnb43Y98fb34BGi8i_zDeYfrzJHl44W5-V98LKIhGytc_T8VLEM3IUtOnSsGgiwSJ0Ey8VmCx1fDgubkohJ9HQnrK2JVgc2cI63rzQ7mj4hDiumIb/s1600/20160124-Washi+-8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8wYfLJ1FHR1BvCkV2T3xZ_U5cEFgEnb43Y98fb34BGi8i_zDeYfrzJHl44W5-V98LKIhGytc_T8VLEM3IUtOnSsGgiwSJ0Ey8VmCx1fDgubkohJ9HQnrK2JVgc2cI63rzQ7mj4hDiumIb/s320/20160124-Washi+-8.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
Lawn again, a bit too sheer not to line, so ended up doing a fully lined version. Lining finishes at tunic length.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b>Details on the shirring on my Husqvarna Designer II:</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Cut shirring elastic 40" long, fold in half and lay over marked line. Hook loop of elastic onto little section on back of presser foot C, Set stitch to bridge stitch (stitch #31) and sew. Elastic on right side slips into groove under presser foot and the stitch works right & left to catch both pieces of elastic.</div>

<br />
Didn't quite have enough of the Christmas fabric I wanted to use, so improvised and used plain red for the back and also a band along the waist at the front.<br />

The perfectionist in me can spy a few not-quite-perfect intersections. I have realised though that even quilts in fancy quilting books are not perfect and it is the overall impression that is what makes a quilt.<br />

"Nite Nape" (night time nappy)<br />
and<br />
"Top" (for the day time)<br />
I said if she was dolly's mummy she would need to pay this seamstress to make more clothes. Ten cents apiece was the agreed price and so off this seamstress went to work. For pittance!<br />
<br />
The "Nite Nape" was cut from felt, with velcro added top and bottom (on opposite sides):<br />

The daytime top was from some stretch knit scraps. A side plate used as a circle template.<br />

<br />
Once the circle was cut out, I folded it in half and snipped out a small circle for the head (the fabric stretches so start small rather than big with the cut out). I then straight stitched from the outer curve up towards the neck line where the black lines are shown in the picture. This created the arm holes and sleeves.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Because this seamstress is generous (and she was having fun) she added a dress free of charge.<br />
Using the same technique with a larger plate I cut out a big circle, folded in half and made the head hole. Becuase I was using cotton I cut the neck hole a bit bigger (no stretch) and also stitched around it with a zig zag stitch to stop heaps of fraying.<br />
I took a long thin strip of fabric, found the centre and placed this centrally across the back of the dress as shown, attaching it to the dress with zig zag stitch over the section highlighted with the red line below.<br />

Piles of 5 inch charm squares from a whole lot of different packs. Autumnal shades, with some brighter blues and greens to lift it. My idea is to make these into a light/dark half square triangle quilt.<br />

This quilt has been forming and storming for a long time.<br />
Playing around on my board with different light/dark half square triangle combinations.<br />
This was one idea...<br />

But this was where it began heading instead. My ideas board wasn't big enough for the planning of this layout, so I used an existing quilt as the 'board' on the floor so I could still move it out of the way.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrYujVrjyFdG_1uNqNqGyZS5pVbFfrAOgWIQJ3B5J9NVyWKJWdJ6AJ2EHCGuNaoI8-abVvw8oTga_62UFfqR54z5ZqOMjopUiublsw6FhcoUl1Gneif7tu1M1dKhR853NJ2S5Ls1uvbwzV/s1600/2015_03_11HST+light+dark+quilt4866.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrYujVrjyFdG_1uNqNqGyZS5pVbFfrAOgWIQJ3B5J9NVyWKJWdJ6AJ2EHCGuNaoI8-abVvw8oTga_62UFfqR54z5ZqOMjopUiublsw6FhcoUl1Gneif7tu1M1dKhR853NJ2S5Ls1uvbwzV/s320/2015_03_11HST+light+dark+quilt4866.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
Eventually I was happy with the design.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYWR3GKxNoOQ4cApPTdgY47HTiu0B4NJcmSUbk97n1R6-ET_QAlKChZBRkzL1AXV6OpekBksYTsahyphenhyphenQZ7Rkm-REgQ-qOUFx2S5_I2USlwFrMn8x8c697ltheytAxCUh8uw3dgvfdWmrI12/s1600/2015_04_02HST+light+dark+quilt5329.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYWR3GKxNoOQ4cApPTdgY47HTiu0B4NJcmSUbk97n1R6-ET_QAlKChZBRkzL1AXV6OpekBksYTsahyphenhyphenQZ7Rkm-REgQ-qOUFx2S5_I2USlwFrMn8x8c697ltheytAxCUh8uw3dgvfdWmrI12/s400/2015_04_02HST+light+dark+quilt5329.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is how I went about making the light/dark HSTs.<br />
One dark fabric charm square and one light fabric charm square placed right sides together, edges well aligned. Pin to secure. Draw a line with fabric pen corner to corner using a 45' ruler to get the angle correct.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBFMioxEYtKU9EYVR7FpH-0mK3pbpjmMmkyKG5UCr-hqqkOWYwzIBwS-Bop5cTQNdHv3HZ-NhVAYiEnMhBizbesLYHAdjO9eRMnxQrJM-Ob-NGpaReVAKw0hbZNbjpwI-sbTMKou5U5uUZ/s1600/2015_03_10HST+light+dark+quilt4863.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBFMioxEYtKU9EYVR7FpH-0mK3pbpjmMmkyKG5UCr-hqqkOWYwzIBwS-Bop5cTQNdHv3HZ-NhVAYiEnMhBizbesLYHAdjO9eRMnxQrJM-Ob-NGpaReVAKw0hbZNbjpwI-sbTMKou5U5uUZ/s400/2015_03_10HST+light+dark+quilt4863.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Sew 1/4" to either side of the drawn line. You can chain stitch all the pieces to move the process along.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_hlH4u9D4JhS55577U2kD2KV8HFlZf0rplmRGIohkCe42Bapph6qQZlOktmwwOOIfbc4Applew6by5mQZbrJ1QYKntN29KFIGb1OWI2AUw7EKOW9AddYDtRx7VwBbIGvPcxj4cbPg21Uy/s1600/2015_03_26HST+light+dark+quilt5050.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_hlH4u9D4JhS55577U2kD2KV8HFlZf0rplmRGIohkCe42Bapph6qQZlOktmwwOOIfbc4Applew6by5mQZbrJ1QYKntN29KFIGb1OWI2AUw7EKOW9AddYDtRx7VwBbIGvPcxj4cbPg21Uy/s320/2015_03_26HST+light+dark+quilt5050.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
Then use some slave labour to speed up the process of removing pins and cutting the threads if you have chain pieced...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7A24DxpyaTBl5KuQtIZnX-BaREO-sV_RmdpUN9MfaGZUrnREwO5oLFA7RslF3YrmZc6ukbZ01NHM_gxSr8EoujHp9Y4MU4HW1OJi1UuIhKsPVzmEgamSMrQ1riJmhb_NpFsUBg_QzeRJj/s1600/2015_03_26HST+light+dark+quilt5053.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7A24DxpyaTBl5KuQtIZnX-BaREO-sV_RmdpUN9MfaGZUrnREwO5oLFA7RslF3YrmZc6ukbZ01NHM_gxSr8EoujHp9Y4MU4HW1OJi1UuIhKsPVzmEgamSMrQ1riJmhb_NpFsUBg_QzeRJj/s320/2015_03_26HST+light+dark+quilt5053.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next use your rotary cutter & cut along the drawn line to end up with 2 triangles. Open up the triangles and press. I decided to press seams open for this quilt rather than to one side.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1xu_ldurXK1NT-EkDaZBsgA4EZWdJiwiA5kSxO1LHnDaBGQsk7AY7JVLkFPRtfpUaiQCcEQouhjHHAN91kY27WQmB6iF1DLrt-DzqplB7cNBh5OZ0I7pDbnh6kgalO2iHYBNcDec8_oBv/s1600/2015_05_05HST+light+dark+quilt5318.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1xu_ldurXK1NT-EkDaZBsgA4EZWdJiwiA5kSxO1LHnDaBGQsk7AY7JVLkFPRtfpUaiQCcEQouhjHHAN91kY27WQmB6iF1DLrt-DzqplB7cNBh5OZ0I7pDbnh6kgalO2iHYBNcDec8_oBv/s320/2015_05_05HST+light+dark+quilt5318.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">One pressed open square</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Trim the square to size (4.5"), using the 45' angle to line up and ensure the triangles are of equal size. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPULSd5__zIy8weoZVO8QG4KUd_iWa6c2J-OhO-iDSXWO4Pz8y2PlQiQXx5JFq7_oaqWaseibc6HeVZr8Syso0liJaaV2Ark4DDz82npWKlEqrAQIagGooJtOFZSxZiY-wj4hYJJ7N9jnK/s1600/2015_05_05HST+light+dark+quilt5319.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPULSd5__zIy8weoZVO8QG4KUd_iWa6c2J-OhO-iDSXWO4Pz8y2PlQiQXx5JFq7_oaqWaseibc6HeVZr8Syso0liJaaV2Ark4DDz82npWKlEqrAQIagGooJtOFZSxZiY-wj4hYJJ7N9jnK/s320/2015_05_05HST+light+dark+quilt5319.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
BEWARE - this step can lead to confusion and frustration if you turn any of the squares the wrong way or mismatch any pairs! Lots of photos and lots of checking.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif8umsV5LsIUofCM7rpnddQiUgDPKHyMHzP34ouAqkk3TML9j3Fv6Yce_Wdc8_V2e1G1_q6DuJDhTcWpOlKKdcTjj_qPklgs5meQ7WPXCLXoBsvQLRhQuUOnn7i6LNwXoqDrBRg78nZuSs/s1600/2015_05_05HST+light+dark+quilt5320.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif8umsV5LsIUofCM7rpnddQiUgDPKHyMHzP34ouAqkk3TML9j3Fv6Yce_Wdc8_V2e1G1_q6DuJDhTcWpOlKKdcTjj_qPklgs5meQ7WPXCLXoBsvQLRhQuUOnn7i6LNwXoqDrBRg78nZuSs/s320/2015_05_05HST+light+dark+quilt5320.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Match pairs, pin along side to be stitched together. I added a diagonal pin to help prevent any shifting of the fabric.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjswEH2GVoFmTYIbzfRrr4s8lFr9jjEUzdIfv7liCNudl72tiPxx1t8ChK3Fk_QEj-Nr-B-6AEqXgdE8cOCokCCyLLghP3D5pBji37tlLeRKldTUygbkyiwzLZYbaZHt6mocsjUOknaMWKT/s1600/2015_05_05HST+light+dark+quilt5321.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjswEH2GVoFmTYIbzfRrr4s8lFr9jjEUzdIfv7liCNudl72tiPxx1t8ChK3Fk_QEj-Nr-B-6AEqXgdE8cOCokCCyLLghP3D5pBji37tlLeRKldTUygbkyiwzLZYbaZHt6mocsjUOknaMWKT/s320/2015_05_05HST+light+dark+quilt5321.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Chain piece pairs together, remove pins & press open. You will now have rectangles made up of 2 squares each (4 triangles).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pair, pin & sew the rectangles in a similar way to end up with blocks made up of 2x2 squares (8 triangles). Before opening clip corners off to help reduce bulk at seam.</div>

<br />
Continue in a similar way to slowly piece larger and larger blocks together. This is where I am up to so far. A bit of unpicking today to make sure that the seams are meeting where they should. A pin at 90' to the fabric at each intersection seems to be the best method for me, and then plenty more pins in between to keep the top & bottom layers nice and even.<br />

"Do you think you could make dolly some pyjamas mummy?"<br />
<br />
Oh dear. I have been thinking for a while that dolly could do with some new attire. All she came dressed in is definitely from a summer range, and I feel cold just looking at her at the moment! But she is quite small, and plastic, and not very bendy, so I was scared of how I could make something that Little Imp could also get on and off of dolly without needing my help.<br />
<br />
And then I had an idea... I keep many of Little Imp's old clothes for cutting up and sewing with & this was a perfect reason to use them. Once I got going it was actually fun, and before I knew it, not only did dolly have some pyjamas, she also had some cords & a skirt!<br />

<br />
The PJs came from a sleeping bag. A sleeve became the pants, with the sleeve cuff as the waist band and a triangular seam creating the legs. Pinking shears worked to eliminate the need for sewing seams. THe top was made out of the base area of the bag. I pinking sheared a circle for the neck & stitched a few seams to create the shape of a long sleeve top. Done, & stretchy enough for Little Imp not to need me!<br />

To make the corduroy pants I cut a square from the top of a pair of pants, including the elastic. Dolly is lying here to help me gauge the length. <br />

A few simple straight lines of sewing along the open edge to create a tube, and then along the purple lines you can (just) see below to create the legs.<br />

And then pinking shears again for the base of the pants.<br />

The skirt was even simpler. Cut out from the top of an existing elastic waistbanded skirt with a single seam to create a tube. Pinking Sheared bottom. Done.<br />

Pity I can't make her behave like one too...<br />
She did enjoy herself running around Kings Park with friends this afternoon while wearing her wings. Almost angelic.<br />

<h3>
How To:</h3>
I traced a paper template from a friend's set of angel wings. You could make any shape though really.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4QBNETEqgYqnGAN_sNie-fmCCWbJT9P3r_o8XBwtpFqwsX2AzILgFYUjy2Q5Gf7KeuMeiZGd38HSwCEfqt0LL_KCvwDut26IO4LwK1g8-2gqUWXBezF8Ywu6_j6b3nz2pB2DfVaw6gjUc/s1600/2015_03_12dress+up+wings4875.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4QBNETEqgYqnGAN_sNie-fmCCWbJT9P3r_o8XBwtpFqwsX2AzILgFYUjy2Q5Gf7KeuMeiZGd38HSwCEfqt0LL_KCvwDut26IO4LwK1g8-2gqUWXBezF8Ywu6_j6b3nz2pB2DfVaw6gjUc/s320/2015_03_12dress+up+wings4875.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Use this template to cut 2 (one reversed) wing shapes out of some stiffish felt (or thin wadding or interfacing). This will provide a bit of shape for the wings. The fabric I used for the wings was a big offcut of dusty pink upholstery fabric (the white below is the water resistant 'wrong side' of this fabric). Double over the wing fabric, right sides together. Pin so the fabric doesn't shift and then place each piece of felt onto the fabric. Mark the outline of the wing about 3-5mm bigger than the felt itself and then cut out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcS1IzuVzmEB5H0v4AVRSTAnIvAONv5U1Eo69PWhMncduIa9YL1UYQjRH5Fnup16K8_p54iTCwzQLimscL8TGvN_-Ic3IwjnLEkE4W9XWzvzNr6gjWs8DBivCPD3Wlrx8sSKZIw2vKsCVG/s1600/2015_03_15dress+up+wings4880.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcS1IzuVzmEB5H0v4AVRSTAnIvAONv5U1Eo69PWhMncduIa9YL1UYQjRH5Fnup16K8_p54iTCwzQLimscL8TGvN_-Ic3IwjnLEkE4W9XWzvzNr6gjWs8DBivCPD3Wlrx8sSKZIw2vKsCVG/s320/2015_03_15dress+up+wings4880.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
Assemble a 'wing sandwich' for each wing: fabric-felt-fabric. The fabric should be facing right side out as you can see below. Pin all the way around to hold the 3 layers together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYCPaNh9whof4f1AMSP6Bh3X4DJ4SoVHsSKXpNidvAqq-HeHoMl_E7BK0motJSlAKJRR1K9WXxGiQbTU4nnt_17beF6nVZyZsxD-sDKitBBd8COuO3ZDIQtmla3Tklf1MijIC2IeG2WRW3/s1600/2015_03_15dress+up+wings4882.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYCPaNh9whof4f1AMSP6Bh3X4DJ4SoVHsSKXpNidvAqq-HeHoMl_E7BK0motJSlAKJRR1K9WXxGiQbTU4nnt_17beF6nVZyZsxD-sDKitBBd8COuO3ZDIQtmla3Tklf1MijIC2IeG2WRW3/s320/2015_03_15dress+up+wings4882.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
Then stitch all the way around the outside of the wing to hold all 3 layers together (with the felt hidden inside). I have a blanket type stitch on my machine that I used to finish the edges at the same time.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiT1RV3KMXDjgxkPJ_0n2rv8H9-H6aZGZjtn1gZr9RD-5M5NJhZ4FxhN066dajONDQz0MKCEVidPYZic3sB169dU38AUm_ISazYkWKnIf1Fc7P1e4f7_f70tXqxOVGg7yxcARGxmw06UsY/s1600/2015_03_15dress+up+wings4883.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiT1RV3KMXDjgxkPJ_0n2rv8H9-H6aZGZjtn1gZr9RD-5M5NJhZ4FxhN066dajONDQz0MKCEVidPYZic3sB169dU38AUm_ISazYkWKnIf1Fc7P1e4f7_f70tXqxOVGg7yxcARGxmw06UsY/s320/2015_03_15dress+up+wings4883.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
Add some straight line stitching for a bit more stiffness and definition.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu4HHgyChR0qxvcPwtIC3D-vixZYDIsYLmiyQIhBgWmyWDL0iKs95634RQebwulji-5n1ov3KSMFYnN0NcQXusX3GJEiKp7qipRuvQNBiBGBBWx8Pfcrg3LGih2l8TtDFGnX16CpaR1akR/s1600/2015_03_15dress+up+wings4881.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu4HHgyChR0qxvcPwtIC3D-vixZYDIsYLmiyQIhBgWmyWDL0iKs95634RQebwulji-5n1ov3KSMFYnN0NcQXusX3GJEiKp7qipRuvQNBiBGBBWx8Pfcrg3LGih2l8TtDFGnX16CpaR1akR/s320/2015_03_15dress+up+wings4881.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Add elastic for attaching to the body. I used about 24" of elastic. Take each end of the elastic and bring into the centre and stitch to hold (so you end up with 2 loops as seen below).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-FY41QVbQfNHmRrjEVooEbbEDXdVzeO9NxMA8nivFAWO0Xd47kUHQtEHKjeyj086TAqCRXLMa-Sgz04ZVXFPx_zhJzbCeWXdDmEwoN46ge_tMdPNhk1thrkxTkITIdZnk2i9KJ_RHdHWT/s1600/2015_03_15dress+up+wings4885.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-FY41QVbQfNHmRrjEVooEbbEDXdVzeO9NxMA8nivFAWO0Xd47kUHQtEHKjeyj086TAqCRXLMa-Sgz04ZVXFPx_zhJzbCeWXdDmEwoN46ge_tMdPNhk1thrkxTkITIdZnk2i9KJ_RHdHWT/s320/2015_03_15dress+up+wings4885.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
I should have attached the elastic to the back of one of the wings at this point so that the rectangle stitching you can see on the wings I made was hidden. But I didn't - so the pictures show what I did do.<br />

She loved it so much I wondered if I could use the skirt part to make into a new favourite. This is how it turned out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE9mbCTdwRxh9_GnwTNf2ZQ2zoQAbC6VXc4QBHrO1KZGV0gGzvpe-hTtp3pnf96HEYlhyphenhyphenur3-8lq0wu-QkTb3T-gWGA0BaiAdxMXjIwWl0kez5BqT7EyJfuYBgDtgsMt38ABaAxOCd9oPT/s1600/2015_03_01upcycle+shirt+dress4873.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE9mbCTdwRxh9_GnwTNf2ZQ2zoQAbC6VXc4QBHrO1KZGV0gGzvpe-hTtp3pnf96HEYlhyphenhyphenur3-8lq0wu-QkTb3T-gWGA0BaiAdxMXjIwWl0kez5BqT7EyJfuYBgDtgsMt38ABaAxOCd9oPT/s1600/2015_03_01upcycle+shirt+dress4873.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the first edition, taken apart at the seam. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7Dq2-nOeV6e3W-1vTDeKDAezaK3sN0o3fXqLbxX_SfzOm2gnNjRUerPMQelE-fyoE_fubiErWS-L7bT5cB_TW2JB8hACvJ7nXmQBEPMvaFccKxRboSlRCw7xa8TO38j2s3cLjhqWbMmPy/s1600/2015_03_01upcycle+shirt+dress4867.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7Dq2-nOeV6e3W-1vTDeKDAezaK3sN0o3fXqLbxX_SfzOm2gnNjRUerPMQelE-fyoE_fubiErWS-L7bT5cB_TW2JB8hACvJ7nXmQBEPMvaFccKxRboSlRCw7xa8TO38j2s3cLjhqWbMmPy/s1600/2015_03_01upcycle+shirt+dress4867.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I found a long sleeve top that would become the new top half of the dress, perfect for winter. I used the original to roughly gauge where to cut the new top - making the bodice a few inches longer this time given Little Imp has grown somewhat.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Cb3CJ6lRaoJOpZsdWsX1BD9C-42QXYFhrPpTLKVKtObEhH7IB07igMu6e-k_JpEzbYrcNT5WAA0hlD8Asac0WboO1AuDH3Y6suJyUgfGbi8LCcy1yuzrODdr2XEvAUFkmx-wLjqNq6vJ/s1600/2015_03_01upcycle+shirt+dress4869.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Cb3CJ6lRaoJOpZsdWsX1BD9C-42QXYFhrPpTLKVKtObEhH7IB07igMu6e-k_JpEzbYrcNT5WAA0hlD8Asac0WboO1AuDH3Y6suJyUgfGbi8LCcy1yuzrODdr2XEvAUFkmx-wLjqNq6vJ/s1600/2015_03_01upcycle+shirt+dress4869.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Somewhere online I saw this trick - add a piece of iron on interfacing just above where you will cut the bodice - this will help the tshirt material keep its shape once the skirt is added. Given the skirt I am adding is quite heavy I thought this would be worth doing. **Note- I later ripped the interfacing out as I had used waistband interfacing that was way too heavy & so you could see a solid, stiff band through the t-shirt fabric.<br />

<br />
With right sides together I pinned the skirt to the shirt bodice - you can see the interfacing in the picture below. Then I stitched this together using a sewing machine.<br />

</div>
I made one of these for Little Imp a few years ago and she has had so much wear out of it. It is an online pattern <a href="https://www.youcanmakethis.com/products/how-to-sew-the-ashbury-peasant-top-sizes-2-10" target="_blank">Ashbury Peasant Top</a> that is super easy to make - no buttons or zips - and pretty forgiving.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXdhbqIR6TUVeRq1y7CskRblgDyGLZtJ5P15tB7zQJJom6mz-o53s87k1At-WA3G-7bqtSJDK9atALzSD6JDjQjIYe5NScOQpLfxwIstTPeur1kIyUfCMt4Y21VnhKwJzyka2ocTALJb5_/s1600/2015_04_05peasant+dress++5083.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXdhbqIR6TUVeRq1y7CskRblgDyGLZtJ5P15tB7zQJJom6mz-o53s87k1At-WA3G-7bqtSJDK9atALzSD6JDjQjIYe5NScOQpLfxwIstTPeur1kIyUfCMt4Y21VnhKwJzyka2ocTALJb5_/s1600/2015_04_05peasant+dress++5083.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I used a lightweight cotton for the first version & it is perfect for summer (saves the need to go through the battle of applying suncream to arms), or when it is a bit cooler with a layer underneath.<br />
<br />
I have used the size 8 bodice sizing for the one I have just made, and the size 6 arms. Probably could have done a size 6 throughout, but too late now! Little Imp likes it, so that is the main thing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Can't have a new dress without a matching hairclip & this is a super easy method.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW-6Ci7y1t7_3i2ekRMmNijUBzxKOj55Ycb2jrFde47WUDvraztBRF8tn2mw7vE8o3pO5ESD8s5iKFUbGXqE0PBWYtxGfmlEePtbBPaOhhqsrfMKwvDMNKW-7K5xFzor_Ipq1Wti6H06sb/s1600/2015_04_05peasant+dress++5082.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW-6Ci7y1t7_3i2ekRMmNijUBzxKOj55Ycb2jrFde47WUDvraztBRF8tn2mw7vE8o3pO5ESD8s5iKFUbGXqE0PBWYtxGfmlEePtbBPaOhhqsrfMKwvDMNKW-7K5xFzor_Ipq1Wti6H06sb/s1600/2015_04_05peasant+dress++5082.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Cut a strip of fabric about 16" x 2". Turn over short raw edges 1/4" wrong sides together and iron. Then fold in half lengthways and iron, wrong sides together. I then used pinking shears to trim the tiniest amount off the long raw edges to stop fraying. Set machine to the longest straight stitch length and then sew close to the raw edges to form a long tube. Pull up thread to begin to gather. Keep going with the gathering & the fabric strip/tube will start to twist. Once it is all gathered up work with the twist to sort of roll it up into a flower shape. Secure with some hand sewing and add a button in the middle to hide the messy bits. Attach to a clip - hey presto!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRvWDX3TkI0uCawDtXkMUVye4LCZTNdetIgv4-Mm2O6IMkydC-qS-JIZA2jz9ntcp56ZHtXBEaddEM7U5EfsiqAsp6Bo8HbyPvu-Vh53QoGeePHvcb8FgC6FSCwWQ7RjoJ7PMh2G6NKPcC/s1600/2015_03_25Pyjama+pants+kids5059.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRvWDX3TkI0uCawDtXkMUVye4LCZTNdetIgv4-Mm2O6IMkydC-qS-JIZA2jz9ntcp56ZHtXBEaddEM7U5EfsiqAsp6Bo8HbyPvu-Vh53QoGeePHvcb8FgC6FSCwWQ7RjoJ7PMh2G6NKPcC/s1600/2015_03_25Pyjama+pants+kids5059.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
Kids pj pants from this book - The Liberty Book of Simple Sewing by Lucinda Ganderton. Instead of needing front & back leg pieces, you cut each leg as a whole & essentially make 2 leg tubes that you sew together & then add a waistband. Easy peasy.<br />
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgioKgJn-W8ZOmH5AOumZRoUv-O3f2OGVYHlgFYPIz81rN0OQYqM5t3IiXw4hpRiWTgdJcvESkmEoKmHlitzjiT1PqKfCYEpCYSaapXYOb7RFx5XJ3VAgkhF3T99tVvaeEjuZF6u3uPLja2/s1600/2015_03_25Pyjama+pants+kids5060.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgioKgJn-W8ZOmH5AOumZRoUv-O3f2OGVYHlgFYPIz81rN0OQYqM5t3IiXw4hpRiWTgdJcvESkmEoKmHlitzjiT1PqKfCYEpCYSaapXYOb7RFx5XJ3VAgkhF3T99tVvaeEjuZF6u3uPLja2/s1600/2015_03_25Pyjama+pants+kids5060.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The pattern called for basting most seams first - I went straight ahead sewing without basting and it worked out fine. I adjusted the length of the cuffs in the given pattern & could have gone even shorter, but guess that means there may be room for growing into.<br />

By the time we got home she was determined to get going on the 'Whooskie' project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh-R3RelcYqKTyynjMANhiERTfJX-RnVpuXHUUnkR-kr8_q5mPniVwAd4JtXiN6u8Mi48IRlDm2283gwrWJI0uwAdaKy9zEeQdW2_p5SlpcB_XmBa4IPILVHJbAqiGXVWxTWDSSR4zQdug/s1600/2015_02_27owl+softie4853.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh-R3RelcYqKTyynjMANhiERTfJX-RnVpuXHUUnkR-kr8_q5mPniVwAd4JtXiN6u8Mi48IRlDm2283gwrWJI0uwAdaKy9zEeQdW2_p5SlpcB_XmBa4IPILVHJbAqiGXVWxTWDSSR4zQdug/s1600/2015_02_27owl+softie4853.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I really wasn't sure how long the enthusiasm would last, but I provided some sheets of tracing paper and she started tracing the shapes from the back of the book, a few bull dog clips helped keep the paper still for little hands. Before dinner she had traced & cut out most of the pieces we needed. A few wobbly lines and cuts here and there, but on the whole Whooskie looked good on paper!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The first call the following morning was to "keep going with Whoosky". I traced around each of her template pieces & little Imp cut out most of the fabric herself<br />

<br />
I restrained myself and let the jagged cutting go for the most part, but again she did such a great job anyway. Here is Whoosky ready for stitching.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did all the sewing this time around, Little Imp sat on my lap with the roles of snipping, pressing the right buttons and helping with thread selection and threading. We had fun!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did do the feet - I free formed stitched directly onto the traced lines, then Little Imp cut around the stitching before I turned right side out & stiffed those tricky little claws.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
A bit of wing stuffing happening here.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I generally attach softie limbs/appendages with a quick straight stitch to one side of the body before stitching front & back body pieces together - I find this makes sure they get stitched in in the right spot.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
A bit of graffiti on Whooskie's bottom so that there can be no mistaking who owns the Owl.<br />

<br />
Love at first sight! There was a period of reassurance required as I covered up all of Whooskie's front body with the right side of the back of the body to sew front & back together & Little Imp had to wait for me to turn Whooskie right side out. "Don't cover up Whooskie mummy, you can't put her feet inside her body! Don't!"<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOY1iG3y7VE6XPRpvG3omiH_KmpGy6qa9kskyY8KHx9kqF9aOHyyi0sRz26NZI7Wt6nbWSsZNbfNr3gqCQlfdj7ZWr4i5tHy-JS-ijbtUpeXiKsV41uV-9Vxs7yff4PlgjfN22whgkMXwq/s1600/2014_12_29frenchknitting+cat4661.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOY1iG3y7VE6XPRpvG3omiH_KmpGy6qa9kskyY8KHx9kqF9aOHyyi0sRz26NZI7Wt6nbWSsZNbfNr3gqCQlfdj7ZWr4i5tHy-JS-ijbtUpeXiKsV41uV-9Vxs7yff4PlgjfN22whgkMXwq/s1600/2014_12_29frenchknitting+cat4661.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
Little Imp was given a french knitter for Christmas. Not the sort I remember having as a kid, this one was big and plasticy, with twirling spools and other attachments.<br />
Little Imp struggled with it all until we worked out that if she just used her hands instead of all the attachments she could knit all by herself. Just like kids did in the 'old days' (ha!).<br />
<br />
I helped a bit, but after a bit of perseverance she had a tube we could turn into a cat - just like the one pictured on the cover of the box the knitter came in (well kind of!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZYv3or0wvkYC_tXIYLz431mAkQZSjGbvIr1arW3uuZIEhH80URGLlWtYPiH47mWuiQhJ-a57UTSJTYJvT0dd4N-FgbFCkHpE-LdeesgJHOGFj6rjK9H5sqqQ96wCO9rhhUQF2YrNu1O0K/s1600/2014_12_28frenchknitting+cat4653.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZYv3or0wvkYC_tXIYLz431mAkQZSjGbvIr1arW3uuZIEhH80URGLlWtYPiH47mWuiQhJ-a57UTSJTYJvT0dd4N-FgbFCkHpE-LdeesgJHOGFj6rjK9H5sqqQ96wCO9rhhUQF2YrNu1O0K/s1600/2014_12_28frenchknitting+cat4653.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
No instructions in the box for how to make said cat, but we muddled our way through, collecting all our ingredients from the craft box - pipe cleaners, felt triangles for ears, goggly eyes, stuffing and glue.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDHR0_-Zqcot00TBCddY7qk-vdKzIOnbYt_JwuWkFa3bJbeepqJHVwhcft4_D9itj_4fTgtHk7K4I8jhoOfsuljhLznj82S-iQ_3urGQbRa8sKWc1BnlSF6RwlhYuubFGljvjTnpvbViw8/s1600/2014_12_28frenchknitting+cat4654.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDHR0_-Zqcot00TBCddY7qk-vdKzIOnbYt_JwuWkFa3bJbeepqJHVwhcft4_D9itj_4fTgtHk7K4I8jhoOfsuljhLznj82S-iQ_3urGQbRa8sKWc1BnlSF6RwlhYuubFGljvjTnpvbViw8/s1600/2014_12_28frenchknitting+cat4654.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We stuffed the tube..<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoSy0T7i0UprlzFMI-PMQ2ZdW9JqpG96ELtLvsm6k9z26J5CSs3_pTtznPt9VbxDtL-idPKEAUMZuyLtMaV-CjvNxZY9ke1C5xNTEMaPN2PWCI8HGuCBZ9ttsOY-6Q4XOZ5fQbyfI-N1c6/s1600/2014_12_28frenchknitting+cat4655.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoSy0T7i0UprlzFMI-PMQ2ZdW9JqpG96ELtLvsm6k9z26J5CSs3_pTtznPt9VbxDtL-idPKEAUMZuyLtMaV-CjvNxZY9ke1C5xNTEMaPN2PWCI8HGuCBZ9ttsOY-6Q4XOZ5fQbyfI-N1c6/s1600/2014_12_28frenchknitting+cat4655.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We tied off the top third to create the neck between the head and body...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-4WehcSElrvDk_4Jr5T_W9eB2eRChamKe5qEiVDpwqRFqEnSH9QxZDLaNvKwz0kOCa2-v7BYp4yRUMcX-etCOU_9u_7bURSS0Mn_t4Wnas8m1cLPFU75DPNrQpNubW4lvOKFXxlVHQzi0/s1600/2014_12_28frenchknitting+cat4656.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-4WehcSElrvDk_4Jr5T_W9eB2eRChamKe5qEiVDpwqRFqEnSH9QxZDLaNvKwz0kOCa2-v7BYp4yRUMcX-etCOU_9u_7bURSS0Mn_t4Wnas8m1cLPFU75DPNrQpNubW4lvOKFXxlVHQzi0/s1600/2014_12_28frenchknitting+cat4656.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
We poked a (pink) pipe cleaner through the stuffing to create the upper legs/arms, and threaded a (blue) pipe cleaner through the base for the lower legs. I folded over a small section on all of the pipe cleaner ends to get rid of the sharp pointy bit. The blue legs we made quite a bit longer to help the cat sit up and balance (see pic further below).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaFom_HMITVHq0f4UvkhXc58-f3CH0naxlw8hnrZGi0owRRU_zmT_LzJxlMtp4xYDlZCCNI1tC6UFlQJ9MsSczuBtWzS2aVJ2lA9dM5paYdr4lmBxawXFrZDpANpB2NkuOMwZLI6JgXg_3/s1600/2014_12_29frenchknitting+cat4658.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaFom_HMITVHq0f4UvkhXc58-f3CH0naxlw8hnrZGi0owRRU_zmT_LzJxlMtp4xYDlZCCNI1tC6UFlQJ9MsSczuBtWzS2aVJ2lA9dM5paYdr4lmBxawXFrZDpANpB2NkuOMwZLI6JgXg_3/s1600/2014_12_29frenchknitting+cat4658.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Short sparkly pipe cleaners were threaded through on the face & twisted over and around each other for whiskers and the felt triangles were pinched in a bit to create an ear shaped curve and positioned with a liberal amount of glue.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNtFJkR32Fsj8f6nXNx3IJXJx7jN5zas9wXcGgCqxsT7yrWjP1Nc4UjNj1VmQLyHazVO9U9w_4GRuXsE9Q0Wiy5kJ89SbouMXVbzwiMtlMf3lmNv_v4boewFczF15agON9_GPsVahNwXRF/s1600/2014_12_29frenchknitting+cat4659.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNtFJkR32Fsj8f6nXNx3IJXJx7jN5zas9wXcGgCqxsT7yrWjP1Nc4UjNj1VmQLyHazVO9U9w_4GRuXsE9Q0Wiy5kJ89SbouMXVbzwiMtlMf3lmNv_v4boewFczF15agON9_GPsVahNwXRF/s1600/2014_12_29frenchknitting+cat4659.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
The green pipe cleaner was twirled around a pencil for curly whirly-ness and looped in near the bottom to create a tail.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5b17AYGcTHiwEZzJlMzwrgmGXAtEmLTJObGC-u1AXu00ZUK1JzoWnaG3FfNlJBWdxadHxFfZRBjxaFS_RI5Xw_SRvin-V-hidYtJbXUbEkRH6j0o7pOhh6r6R2R9qDXCHAQbrHab4F8WT/s1600/2014_12_29frenchknitting+cat4660.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5b17AYGcTHiwEZzJlMzwrgmGXAtEmLTJObGC-u1AXu00ZUK1JzoWnaG3FfNlJBWdxadHxFfZRBjxaFS_RI5Xw_SRvin-V-hidYtJbXUbEkRH6j0o7pOhh6r6R2R9qDXCHAQbrHab4F8WT/s1600/2014_12_29frenchknitting+cat4660.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
A stray green pom pom was located by Little Imp during my tail attaching and proclaimed to be required as a belly button (because all cats have to have belly buttons apparently).<br />
Two googly eyes were glued in place where they belong...,<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOY1iG3y7VE6XPRpvG3omiH_KmpGy6qa9kskyY8KHx9kqF9aOHyyi0sRz26NZI7Wt6nbWSsZNbfNr3gqCQlfdj7ZWr4i5tHy-JS-ijbtUpeXiKsV41uV-9Vxs7yff4PlgjfN22whgkMXwq/s1600/2014_12_29frenchknitting+cat4661.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOY1iG3y7VE6XPRpvG3omiH_KmpGy6qa9kskyY8KHx9kqF9aOHyyi0sRz26NZI7Wt6nbWSsZNbfNr3gqCQlfdj7ZWr4i5tHy-JS-ijbtUpeXiKsV41uV-9Vxs7yff4PlgjfN22whgkMXwq/s1600/2014_12_29frenchknitting+cat4661.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
And the third eye you may have noticed in the 'ingredients' pile at the beginning? Well, apparently some cats also have an eye on the end of their tails!<br />

I found these photographs today & have realised I never uploaded them - from 2013's Christmas. Some Paper Bunting Christmas cards I made all that time ago. Quite a lot of work, but they do look good at the end of it all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
White A5 card folded in half with a Christmas print taped onto the front half. THe first ones I did like the photo below - the Christmas paper covering the whole front of the card with about a 1-2cm overhang onto the back over the folded edge - looks a bit more finished). I think the cards looked better though leaving a small border of white card showing all the way around (see below).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then cut out an assortment of small 'bunting' triangles from coordinating Christmas printed papers, thread a needle with gold thread, tie a knot in one end ...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvBBJuZIDHl3c6lfiSe5S3LzEbXd1aTtJAr7WFYNRmbrRf1mrvvDyD5bbh1k0wVJqi9eAm74mKfguoseRZ0C-b4kGa8RAPqZL_qf8U_limpJoAGkbzivbo2co8-6tseDHsRcaRBRXbnY6U/s1600/2013_11_14bunting+card0957.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvBBJuZIDHl3c6lfiSe5S3LzEbXd1aTtJAr7WFYNRmbrRf1mrvvDyD5bbh1k0wVJqi9eAm74mKfguoseRZ0C-b4kGa8RAPqZL_qf8U_limpJoAGkbzivbo2co8-6tseDHsRcaRBRXbnY6U/s1600/2013_11_14bunting+card0957.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
... and sew them all together, leaving gaps between each one to string them out across the card, allowing a bit of slack so it looks a bit more like they might be hanging up.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgXhody5BTeWuw1xVwXwMdiHGUkKsLIexj06zX5LXBR1mOYL1tbVgQQ16-L-wo-Smx1iF-GKItMBc1DT9FeB4KiFguH32uNlo1PijtvUvt5_YdmbjsIFxjlQrg3VUaP4AFaUcYLZqWtGFe/s1600/2013_11_14bunting+card0958.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgXhody5BTeWuw1xVwXwMdiHGUkKsLIexj06zX5LXBR1mOYL1tbVgQQ16-L-wo-Smx1iF-GKItMBc1DT9FeB4KiFguH32uNlo1PijtvUvt5_YdmbjsIFxjlQrg3VUaP4AFaUcYLZqWtGFe/s1600/2013_11_14bunting+card0958.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Tie off the other end of the thread too and then use double sided tape to stick the triangles at each end down (and in doing so hide the knots).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5RfdK_P-WI1puUSepGQd3kM4EtyK6sZFaqr05_ZoKNgTSWTV8vL41B_Ua5vzIpb6NJPsSbne3-xEMJtwAtFzja4rNoK_CIMt-DRLCmhmtGZZDlqKaEP49hk5_YZHviTXYK4PO5K_xoNkK/s1600/2013_11_14bunting+card0959.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5RfdK_P-WI1puUSepGQd3kM4EtyK6sZFaqr05_ZoKNgTSWTV8vL41B_Ua5vzIpb6NJPsSbne3-xEMJtwAtFzja4rNoK_CIMt-DRLCmhmtGZZDlqKaEP49hk5_YZHviTXYK4PO5K_xoNkK/s1600/2013_11_14bunting+card0959.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Stamp out some sort of Christmassy word (like 'Christmas' for instance!!)...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidgD2oIgncZiG7mNAxJzVnQqXhkYRIlv0zsP53y2q9w089OtDdib9NXNo2P-33X09nazwrmiVyVEGog0nPy1LbyHo7-jTwogCtPBWHdxQszzjXGl9Qc7EP_8MAbPBAM_H8Z7_cduBsbV3g/s1600/2013_11_14bunting+card0961.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidgD2oIgncZiG7mNAxJzVnQqXhkYRIlv0zsP53y2q9w089OtDdib9NXNo2P-33X09nazwrmiVyVEGog0nPy1LbyHo7-jTwogCtPBWHdxQszzjXGl9Qc7EP_8MAbPBAM_H8Z7_cduBsbV3g/s1600/2013_11_14bunting+card0961.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
...and stick that on the front too. (The card below shows the design I prefer; where I left a small white border showing all the way around)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1CrmN1mrQt_7j5BWRCgwnOBP4lTlZi4R6NVFAWq8pacuGguduod5zV9n6vngIz_zMZ1kugXHrSs6DWa3BOBtcGb4yeTu7RlBaroNEfKuyG_hoFe4nNQCzetEMm1Dwi-w3AyXW0njbP_qq/s1600/2013_11_14bunting+card0965.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1CrmN1mrQt_7j5BWRCgwnOBP4lTlZi4R6NVFAWq8pacuGguduod5zV9n6vngIz_zMZ1kugXHrSs6DWa3BOBtcGb4yeTu7RlBaroNEfKuyG_hoFe4nNQCzetEMm1Dwi-w3AyXW0njbP_qq/s1600/2013_11_14bunting+card0965.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Add a little something to the back of the card for fun - here a small punched out tree and a left over triangle. All Done.<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the key projects to finish in time for Christmas was another quilt commission, this time by a school friend for her young daughter who is due to head to boarding school next year. A very different quilt from those I have made before, she sent me a picture of a quilt she liked and a range of fabric she had selected. </span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

Preparations for feasts and advent and gifts are already underway in my little world.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIXQfbnjpZkzNJh0Q-QwSPnM4Qo1isRPaFprc4goyAVBuNhRPg5Ba_T2qQ6yEtDBRAwrQfmHn67U77EvsWAWjA3VA6HVKswFwfJ322wegof8-xzSDb6uycwXpwTi-aojrHut4m5h3VHOAG/s1600/2014_11_09christmas+crackers4359.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIXQfbnjpZkzNJh0Q-QwSPnM4Qo1isRPaFprc4goyAVBuNhRPg5Ba_T2qQ6yEtDBRAwrQfmHn67U77EvsWAWjA3VA6HVKswFwfJ322wegof8-xzSDb6uycwXpwTi-aojrHut4m5h3VHOAG/s400/2014_11_09christmas+crackers4359.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
One feast I am very excited about is to be hosted at our house, with all the Hootchie Ladies (my bestest uni girlfriends) and families coming to celebrate.<br />
<br />
One of the other crafty hootchies and I have been at work making Christmas crackers. Here is a little of how it went down.<br />
<br />
We gathered supplies - Christmas paper napkins (good for easy tearing therefore good for a good cracker rip), snaps, toilet rolls, raffia for tying, card and prettyness for decorating.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfd_jHDwKmYWVwhecxK5p81NB8Sd3MOvFrjhVx2IzjU0LcR6eMAa6ICA-8VpOrPgORUz5jmULQdr6123tgjnsxo-DnxY5SwLL8ajbFnyKhZgv46NVLmqsij7twAIJSvjhZB_VFZmM9Lefc/s1600/2014_11_01christmas+crackers4370.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfd_jHDwKmYWVwhecxK5p81NB8Sd3MOvFrjhVx2IzjU0LcR6eMAa6ICA-8VpOrPgORUz5jmULQdr6123tgjnsxo-DnxY5SwLL8ajbFnyKhZgv46NVLmqsij7twAIJSvjhZB_VFZmM9Lefc/s320/2014_11_01christmas+crackers4370.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
We wrote the jokes, super BAD cracker jokes - you can see how much fun this part was:)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNp7iIwIZ8Pinbs29GX1brR-esdIaIrsjxqS5YexST4jUS9fqsq4lzejK5PkJTDSpbM2N4Nl2nnhrrP46dJ2nOfWR7DPIpAeaeEuofkZEB__SqeZjgwRjxSIPqvhM6fgnwEVJKuQqLDsGd/s1600/2014_11_01christmas+crackers4371.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNp7iIwIZ8Pinbs29GX1brR-esdIaIrsjxqS5YexST4jUS9fqsq4lzejK5PkJTDSpbM2N4Nl2nnhrrP46dJ2nOfWR7DPIpAeaeEuofkZEB__SqeZjgwRjxSIPqvhM6fgnwEVJKuQqLDsGd/s320/2014_11_01christmas+crackers4371.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, see those naughty little Christmas elves in the picture above. They were <a href="http://onelittleimp.blogspot.com.au/2014/01/clothes-pin-elves.html" target="_blank">created last year</a> and got up to mischief every morning of advent. Well they seemed to have got wind of Christmas preparations and made an appearance...and made us drink some wine...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSpW8JjWzQu1snbxjdi7dx8pAiZhqjtOoBefe4QvF-eoC-f7PaPzA6slq2zWsgyW2FYmx-xvZm9IggKZ75A5WHxYdPGIFgzLZfVfrxxkqhAhijkxONuqxH5HW7GaxLuxOLpnZx2EpOJQkq/s1600/2014_11_01christmas+crackers4364.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSpW8JjWzQu1snbxjdi7dx8pAiZhqjtOoBefe4QvF-eoC-f7PaPzA6slq2zWsgyW2FYmx-xvZm9IggKZ75A5WHxYdPGIFgzLZfVfrxxkqhAhijkxONuqxH5HW7GaxLuxOLpnZx2EpOJQkq/s320/2014_11_01christmas+crackers4364.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
So, we wrote the jokes, we found/made some trinkets (not showing you those pictures - it's a secret!), and we compiled the crackers. Lots of crackers.<br />
<br />
We think they look good.<br />

Was I about to be asked to make another <a href="http://onelittleimp.blogspot.com.au/2014/08/tiny-drawstring-bags-for-montessori.html" target="_blank">36 fiddly little drawstring bags</a>?<br />
I'm happy to make more bags down the track, but this term there are just too many Christmas crafts that are needing finishing (or starting for that matter!).<br />
<br />
The request was not for bags thank goodness, but instead to renew the classroom 'fabric matching job'.<br />
<br />
This is a 'sensorial' job completed by the younger children, essentially there are 2 piles of different types of fabrics and they need to use their sense of touch alone to match the fabrics with their eyes masked.<br />
<br />
I managed to get a pile of assorted fabrics from a craftsy work colleague to add to some I had at home & this is what eventuated - a lovely pile of varied textures.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXbZ_C0o9WX_jQa3yJej7-P4sakBEBXzDxQC0eVxzNDPpulTj-IKAV4Oknp0yiF_g9EnSClpp-Mqer449lUNkw4laaAjZdVj6XF4oLojb8UvHQjpxyuFUDSxHJtbVRcQn0BF0OQMb4Hx6P/s1600/2014_10_30fabric+matching4335.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXbZ_C0o9WX_jQa3yJej7-P4sakBEBXzDxQC0eVxzNDPpulTj-IKAV4Oknp0yiF_g9EnSClpp-Mqer449lUNkw4laaAjZdVj6XF4oLojb8UvHQjpxyuFUDSxHJtbVRcQn0BF0OQMb4Hx6P/s1600/2014_10_30fabric+matching4335.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
A quick 'how to':<br />
The finished size of my fabric squares is roughly 4 1/2".<br />
I started with rectangles of most fabrics 5" x 10".<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioF7OxaqGNYiee2WixzA-kY-lpM3UE0xz3uvqRG72evU-IOyaQ1qcCJe-AZynJJPcMhtKaiEaOelccgV0tWAJxc42tDlgxvFrzigk9DnPRhpKcPHOEg7lb8F0FTnbW7hwNqb7_pi1ndDjk/s1600/2014_10_26fabric+matching4325.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioF7OxaqGNYiee2WixzA-kY-lpM3UE0xz3uvqRG72evU-IOyaQ1qcCJe-AZynJJPcMhtKaiEaOelccgV0tWAJxc42tDlgxvFrzigk9DnPRhpKcPHOEg7lb8F0FTnbW7hwNqb7_pi1ndDjk/s1600/2014_10_26fabric+matching4325.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Fold in half, right sides together and pin together if needed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX2b9x14MeKNvs1eTM-T1DyHGAH6q6NPKJ9TqLX6erzhz8Sm_SNfHIS1-FezZt56M5SJd8A3dVO8HLmVn_QqWcq_9vFTPejOq5KWXUQm9re0GujFMiDtPyDYbGhSfWD3dnTcRQ5tfLkden/s1600/2014_10_26fabric+matching4327.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX2b9x14MeKNvs1eTM-T1DyHGAH6q6NPKJ9TqLX6erzhz8Sm_SNfHIS1-FezZt56M5SJd8A3dVO8HLmVn_QqWcq_9vFTPejOq5KWXUQm9re0GujFMiDtPyDYbGhSfWD3dnTcRQ5tfLkden/s1600/2014_10_26fabric+matching4327.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then straight stitch around all four edges (even where the fold crease is) with a good 1/4" allowance & making sure to leave a opening (approx 1") to turn right side out. Once stitched, trim fabric from around the corners & then turn right side out. Poke out the corners & finger press the seams before pressing with an iron to flatten (make sure the fabric can withstand the ironing temperature you choose!)<br />
<br />
Then top stitch all the way around with matching thread to finish each square.<br />
<br />
Some of the fabric types required a bit of a variation from the above method.<br />
<br />
For the fur I decided to make the fabric square single sided, so I just cut 2 squares each 4 1/4" and then backed these with a slightly smaller piece of felt,sewn around the borders twice. This worked well to stop the fur stretching and moulting & will also hopefully mean they last a bit longer with all the handling of little fingers. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsLsZ8KV_irFLPToMs2mHgtnEaM04qD9Y_PFWX1MWiy9XSTz0LcF5D1pax05sdHeo9XBYjQ_mzgFz-CVyBUIw6rvMKSjI8tsWHmtzDcrgtjFHattVf2BqXbX1Yt_Qq2Ckzeska1-_4YpK-/s1600/2014_10_30fabric+matching4338.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsLsZ8KV_irFLPToMs2mHgtnEaM04qD9Y_PFWX1MWiy9XSTz0LcF5D1pax05sdHeo9XBYjQ_mzgFz-CVyBUIw6rvMKSjI8tsWHmtzDcrgtjFHattVf2BqXbX1Yt_Qq2Ckzeska1-_4YpK-/s1600/2014_10_30fabric+matching4338.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The hessian I had was a very large weave, so quite tricky to work with without it unravelling. I used a zigzag stitch to edge the hessian before then folding in half, straight stitching/turning inside out etc.<br />
To reinforce the edges & the overall square I went around the edges twice with a zigzag instead of straight stitch, and also did the same in the middle as seen below.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiROl5F44qbfIud-Q84yk5oAYVRliUtA3P_f1pZ09iEkQHR2moA8TalN7_1IsZzyI274H0YBQMaQoZoFXQUjc-MYvqeRJBz1S9jnz1CLdfRsSpIbWHDTXd7oy6yrTLsRArHPpJRjBVLvm9r/s1600/2014_10_30fabric+matching4339.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiROl5F44qbfIud-Q84yk5oAYVRliUtA3P_f1pZ09iEkQHR2moA8TalN7_1IsZzyI274H0YBQMaQoZoFXQUjc-MYvqeRJBz1S9jnz1CLdfRsSpIbWHDTXd7oy6yrTLsRArHPpJRjBVLvm9r/s1600/2014_10_30fabric+matching4339.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The square sequined fabric worked best by cutting to the finished size & then straight stitching twice around the edges with wrong sides together (i.e. no turning right side out at the end).<br />
<br />
Here is Little Imp testing the final product before we drop off to school this week (the lowered hat is our make-shift blindfold!).<br />
